Bags or bulk: compare the full cost
A lower price per cubic yard does not always mean a lower total bill.

Start with the amount of material your project needs. Then convert that same volume into two actual purchase quantities: whole bags and the bulk amount your supplier will sell. Compare those totals using current local quotes for an equivalent material.
1. Round to what you can buy
For bags, divide the required cubic feet by the volume printed on one bag and round up. For bulk, first check the supplier’s order increment and minimum. A project that needs 0.8 cubic yards might require a 1-yard order if the yard sells in half-yard steps.
2. Compare complete prices
Multiply the rounded bag count by the price per bag. Multiply the rounded bulk quantity by the price per cubic yard, then add delivery. A small order can look inexpensive until the delivery fee is included.
Worked example — illustrative prices, not market quotes
A 12 × 8 foot bed with 3 inches of material needs 24 cubic feet. That is 12 two-cubic-foot bags, or a 1-yard bulk order if the supplier sells in quarter-yard increments.
At $4 per bag, the bags cost $48. At $35 per cubic yard plus $30 delivery, bulk costs $65. Bags cost $17 less in this example, before tax and pickup costs.
3. Find the delivery break-even point
Subtract the bulk material cost from the bag total. The result is the delivery fee at which the two options cost the same. In the example above, that is $48 − $35 = $13. Delivery below $13 makes bulk cheaper; above $13, bags cost less.
If the result is negative, bagged material already costs less before a delivery fee. No nonnegative delivery fee will make the bulk quote cheaper.
Compare more than the receipt
- Confirm that you are comparing the same material, grade, and intended use.
- Ask where a delivery can be placed and whether there are access requirements.
- Consider the work of moving loose material from the drop point to the beds.
- Allow for pickup travel, sales tax, or handling charges separately. These are not included in YardBatch’s displayed totals.
A discount only helps if you can use the quantity you have to buy. A bulk minimum may leave extra material that needs a place to go.
