Estimate a mulch refresh without over-ordering
Measure what is already there before you calculate the new layer.

A refresh is different from filling a bare bed. The quantity to buy is based on the additional layer needed, not the entire finished layer. Start by checking the existing mulch in several representative spots. Uneven areas may need different amounts.
Separate the existing layer from the new one
If the intended finished layer is 3 inches and a representative area already has 2 inches, the difference is 1 inch. Enter 1 inch as the depth to add. This example illustrates subtraction; it does not select the right finished depth for every mulch or planting.
Example: a 200-square-foot bed
At 1 additional inch, the new volume is 200 × 1 ÷ 12 = 16.67 cubic feet. That is 9 two-cubic-foot bags after rounding up. Entering 3 inches instead would produce 50 cubic feet and 25 bags.
Check more than one spot
A single measurement near an edge may not represent the whole bed. Record thin sections and places where material has collected. Where the required additions differ substantially, calculate the sections separately rather than using the deepest addition across the entire area.
Choose the finished depth deliberately
Mulch type and site conditions matter. UF/IFAS recommends keeping mulch away from trunks and avoiding excessive buildup. Its mulching guidance is a useful starting point for Florida landscapes. Consult guidance appropriate to your plants and conditions before treating a depth as a universal target.
Compare the quantity you will actually buy
A refresh may be a small enough order that delivery or a bulk minimum dominates the cost. Enter the supplier’s minimum and delivery fee rather than comparing a fraction of a cubic yard that cannot be bought. If bagged material is on sale, use the current price and its actual bag volume.
Keep the allowance visible
If your measurements are approximate, an optional allowance increases the estimated volume. Do not apply an allowance simply to buy a round number: the calculator already rounds bags and bulk orders. An allowance and order rounding are separate steps and both can increase the quantity.
